VERSAPRINT holds third General Assembly, setting the stage for future innovations in battery technology

November 5, 2024 – Online Meeting

This week, VERSAPRINT, a pioneering project focused on developing versatile printed solutions for safer, high-performance battery systems, held its third General Assembly, setting the stage for future innovations in battery technology. Representatives from each of the project’s partner organisations joined to review progress, showcase advancements, and strategise on upcoming objectives as they move forward in the project’s second year.

The General Assembly opened with a presentation from Lisa-Lou Gracia of CEA, the project’s coordinating organisation, who provided an overview of the current status of VERSAPRINT. Her presentation about the project coordination included a refresher on VERSAPRINT’s core objectives and KPIs, updates on intellectual property rights, and a review of the project’s battery journey and global progress. This opening session initiated the productive meeting and encouraged collaboration across the project’s work packages.

Each work package (WP) leader prepared an in-depth presentation covering advancements, challenges, and future goals for their specific project areas:

  • WP2, WP3, WP4 (On-cell Printed Building Blocks): Led by LEITAT, RWTH, and CEA, respectively, these sessions covered developments at different battery component levels—cell, cell unit, and module—focusing on enhanced safety, manufacturability, and recycling.
  • WP5 (Simulation and Decision Tool): Presented by EFE, this session outlined advancements in simulation tools to increase the replicability of VERSAPRINT technologies across diverse applications.
  • WP6 & WP7 (Validation for Automotive and Aeronautic Applications): FEV and SON presented findings on battery validation within relevant environments, emphasising safety, lifecycle, and cost assessments tailored for automotive and aeronautic sectors.
  • WP8 (Dissemination, Communication, and Exploitation): LOM discussed the latest dissemination efforts and highlighted future outreach strategies to enhance VERSAPRINT’s impact across the industry and academic communities.

The final sessions of the day focused on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies. LOM presented their progress in the environmental impact assessment for WPs 2, 3, and 4, emphasising the project’s commitment to sustainable innovation and Europe’s transition towards a climate-neutral future.

The assembly also provided dedicated Q&A sessions, fostering in-depth discussions and collaborative input on each WP’s progress and next steps. This open forum facilitated knowledge sharing among partners, strengthening VERSAPRINT’s integrated approach to solving complex battery technology challenges.

A key highlight of the assembly was the presentation of the project’s first promotional video, a two-minute introduction that aims to increase awareness of VERSAPRINT’s objectives and impact. The video, produced by WP8 leaders LOM, was played during a coffee break, providing attendees a moment to reflect on the project’s overarching vision and ongoing efforts in dissemination, communication, and exploitation.

As VERSAPRINT enters the next semester, partners are committed to advancing battery technology solutions that prioritise safety, sustainability, and performance. The insights and discussions from this General Assembly have paved the way for the upcoming milestones, ensuring that VERSAPRINT’s objectives align with industry standards and the needs of European markets.
